Efforts on to restore banks in rural areas: Collector

Staff Reporter

Many branches shifted to urban areas following threats from naxalites

KARIMNAGAR: Collector M.V. Satyanarayana on Tuesday said that they would take all measures to restore the banks in rural areas, which were shifted to urban areas following naxal threats in various parts of the district some years ago.

Replying to the queries made by legislators during the District Review Committee (DRC) meeting here, he said that the administration would convene a special bankers meeting on November 30 and take measures for the restoration of banks at their original places of sanction in rural areas.

Metpally legislator K. Ramulu said that the bankers had removed a bank from Tandriyal village when there was naxalite movement in the district. In spite the naxalite movement abating, the bankers were reluctant to re-establish the bank in rural areas and demanding setting up of police stations to open a branch, he stated.

Ill treatment

Government Whip D. Sridhar stated that the bankers were refusing to sanction loans to new beneficiaries on the pretext that the old beneficiaries had not repaid the loans sanctioned earlier.

He also charged that the bankers were ill treating the women SHG members when they approach for loans.

Kamalapur legislator Etala Rajender alleged that the bankers were extending financial assistance only to the rich and influential.

They were neglecting the rural poor and forcing them to further remain poor in spite of the government sanctioning several welfare schemes for their uplift, he added.

Special meeting

DRC chairperson and Minister for Mines and Geology P. Sabitha Indra Reddy expressed her ire against the bankers and instructed the administration to convene a special bankers’ meeting to redress the grievances of the general public and legislators.

The meeting had also discussed at length the implementation of Indiramma housing scheme, SC Corporation, DRDA and other welfare schemes.

Ministers T. Jeevan Reddy and J. Ratnakara Rao, legislators Chada Venkat Reddy, Kasipeta Lingaiah, V. Lakshmikantha Rao, MLCs Ch. Sudhakar Rao and Mohan Reddy and other officials were present.
