SALEM: Women activists have urged the Tamil Nadu Government to initiate stringent legal action against all unregistered scan centres and laboratories, which hasten the falling sex ratio. They also took out a rally in the city. Participating at a workshop cum rally on ‘Violence against women’ organised by Village Reconstruction and Development Project (VRDP) and Kurinji Mahalir Iyakkam (KMI), here on Monday, the activists pointed out that many of the medical technologies were being misused for sex selective abortions. They wanted that all the committees that had been formed to monitor the falling sex ratio should be activated. Awareness should be created in educational institutions on falling sex ratio at birth. Enforcement of the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (Prohibition of Sex Selection), (PCPNDT), Act 2002 must be strictly adhered to. Technologies that helped choosing male children should be banned. They urged that strong action should be taken against those who indulged in violence against women. Awareness should be created at village level to deal with issues concerning family violence. The acts related to property, abolition of dowry and wages for women should be implemented in letter and spirit. They also insisted that total prohibition must be enforced in the state.
