This Day That Age
The Union Government is not in a position to hold out any hopes in regard to the requirements of rice of the States this year, according to the Union Food Minister, Mr. A.P. Jain. The Food Minister stated in the Lok Sabha on November 26 that the Central and State Governments had a stock of over a million tons of wheat and rice at the moment, and while they would be able to get imported wheat as a result of negotiations with exporting countries, the chances of importing rice were extremely doubtful. Mr. Jain stated that as rice crops in Burma too had suffered, the exportable surplus from Burma will be considerably less. The steps taken by the Government to inculcate the wheat habit in the rice-eating areas had been quite successful, he said.
