Chandy: continue subsidy
Special Correspondent
Thiruvananthapuram: Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy has demanded the continuation of 20 paisa tariff subsidy for domestic electricity consumers, besides rationalising the deposits they are required to pay on the basis of their consumption.
Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, Mr. Chandy said the State Electricity Regulatory Commission had left it to the government to decide on the 20 paisa tariff subsidy announced by the previous UDF government, even while accepting another UDF proposal benefiting commercial consumers. The government should take a favourable stand on the issue in view of the hardship faced by the people owing to the steep increase in the prices of essential commodities.
He said the UDF government had announced concessions in view of the improved financial strength of the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB). The KSEB’s financial strength improved mainly on account of the cut in transmission losses which came down from 32 per cent in 2002 to 24 per cent in 2006. The then Union Energy Minister the late P.M. Sayeed also helped the State in many ways by relaxing Central norms in its attempt to shore up the financial position of the KSEB.
The KSEB, under the LDF government, had showed a deficit of Rs.1,250 crore and was now trying to pass the burden on its inefficiency and financial profligacy to the consumer. He said the government had failed to prevent leakage in revenue, the price fixed for the KSEB land for Smart City being one of the examples. The State government had failed to utilise Central assistance for several development projects, he said.
