Chandy alleges backdoor appointments

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy has accused the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government of making backdoor appointments in government and quasi-government institutions where recruitment had been entrusted to the Public Service Commission (PSC) by the previous United Democratic Front (UDF) government.

Inaugurating the 18th State conference of the PSC Employees Association (PSCEA) here on Tuesday, Mr. Chandy said the Democratic Youth Federation of India had organised agitations against the UDF government accusing it of imposing a ban on recruitments and had also destroyed public property. It should apologise to the public for making such false allegations when there was no ban on recruitments. During the tenure of the UDF government, the commission had recruited 28,000 persons a year. Now the number of appointments has come down to 18,000 a year.

The UDF government had taken a unanimous decision to ensure social justice in appointments made by the commission. Service rules were amended after taking all sections into confidence. This had increased the workload of the commission staff, but the LDF government which succeeded failed to provide adequate facilities and create posts to ease the workload. Considering the demand to entrust the appointments of more institutions to the commission, the government should provide basic facilities to the staff to discharge their duties efficiently. Credibility and efficiency were the hallmark of the commission. It was the responsibility of the government to equip the commission to function in an efficient manner. The UDF was committed to upholding the credibility of the commission.

Association general secretary P. Sathish Kumar welcomed the gathering. President A. Sadiq presided.
