Twenty acres for sewage treatment plant earmarked The town is totally dependent on open drainage system TADEPALLIGUDEM: The decks are cleared for the long-pending proposal for an underground drainage scheme for this municipal town in West Godavari district. According to Congress MLA Kottu Satyanarayana, the State Government has accorded an administrative approval for implementing the scheme with an estimated cost of Rs 51 crore. Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy is expected to lay a foundation stone for the scheme in the first week of December. The scheme is designed in such a manner that the sullage water was drawn to an isolated place near Uppakapadu, quite away from the town, and later let into Kolleru after treatment. An extent of 20 acres would be acquired for establishing a sewage treatment plant for the purpose, the MLA said. Health hazardThe entire municipal town with 35 wards is totally dependent on open drainage system till now. The sewage water is being let into Eluru canal, a source of drinking water for several areas downstream, including Eluru city, for several years. The people depending on the Godavari water passing through the canal for drinking water are raising a hue and cry over the serious health hazards posed by the increasing levels of water pollution in the canal due to release of sullage water from the urban centres like Tadepalligudem upstream.
