Modernisation works of the canal estimated at Rs. 463.5 crore ANANTAPUR: At last, the Congress Government in the State has woken up to the dire necessity of modernising the Tungabhadra Right High Level Canal (HLC) to ensure flow of allocated water from the inter-State Tungabhadra project in Karnataka to our State without much transmission losses on account of poor canal condition. Minister for Panchayat Raj J.C. Diwakar Reddy has stated a couple of days back that the State Government has given administrative sanction to modernisation works of HLC at an estimated cost of Rs. 463.5 crore. In all probability, tenders for the works are likely to be called in December and the works likely to be grounded by February next, when there would be no supply of water to the canal. As the Karnataka Government has not been accepting the State Government’s proposal for modernisation of the canal in the Tungabhadra Board limits, 105 kms into Karnataka territoryit has now been decided to take up modernisation of the canal in our territory, from 105 km of the canal. The capacity of the canal is likely to be doubled from the present 2,100 cusecs to 4,200 cusecs. As the works can’t be completed in one year, in the gap of water release from February to July, they are likely to be spread for two or three years.
