PUDUKOTTAI: The Pudukottai district wing of the Tamil Nadu High and Higher Secondary School Teachers’ Association has urged the State Government to fix the ratio between teachers and pupils at 1:30 for ensuring quality in both teaching and learning practices. A resolution adopted at its executive held here recently said that the implementation of the ratio, recommended by the Equitable Standard Education Committee led by S. Muthukumaran, should be adhered to in letter and spirit. Name changeAnother resolution pleaded for change in the nomenclature of the ‘School Assistants’ as ‘Graduate Teachers.’ The term ‘school assistant,’ without any reference to the teaching profession, created some ambiguity, particularly when the teachers were drafted for election duty. “We are being mistaken as a non-teaching staff at the booths,” it said. The meeting, through a resolution, urged the government to withdraw the new pension scheme planned to be introduced in Tamil Nadu. It also wanted bifurcation of higher secondary schools, carving out Standards VI to X as one unit and the higher secondary classes as the second unit. Two headmasters should be posted for each unit. The system, if introduced, the resolution said, would go a long way in improving the quality of education being imparted in government schools. Pointing out that the syllabi of science subjects for the Plus Two course was too tough for the students, the meeting suggested simplification of the same. Also separate teachers should be appointed for handling classes for Physics, Chemistry, Botany and Zoology. In many schools, a teacher handled more than one of these science subjects, resulting in excess workload at the cost of quality in teaching. District president of Association T. Ramamurthy presided over the meeting. District secretary G. Jayabalan spoke.
