MADURAI: After Central Vegetable Market, the Corporation and the City Police are looking ways to shift the onion, plantain and fruit markets from the bustling roads in the city to suburbs. In a meeting convened by the Corporation Commissioner, D.J. Dinakkaren, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), S. Prabhakaran, Corporation officials and representatives of the markets participated. The City Engineer, K. Sakthivel, said onion and plantain shops were causing traffic congestion on the Palace Road and East Marret Street. Similarly, vehicular traffic movement is affected along Yanaikkal because of fruit market. “Around 100 trucks enter the city to download these produce everyday,” Mr. Prabhakaran said. While the fruits merchants said that they have found a site near Kadachanendal along the Alagarkoil Road and were willing to shift their market, the Corporation has offered fully developed market for rent for the onion and plantain merchants near Avaniyapuram, Mr. Sakthivel said. The Deputy Commissioner said that Avaniyapuram would be an ideal site for onion merchants, as the produce predominantly comes from Chinnamannur, Uthamapalayam, Cumbum and Chekkanoorani. “The trucks need not enter the city at all and can reach the new site through Kappalur and Tirupparamkundram Road. Besides, they could also have easy access to Mattuthavani integrated bus stand through the Ring Road,” he said. The police have also advised the Corporation officials and fruit merchants to provide sufficient parking lots for the lorries at both the proposed new markets. “The trucks should be parked only within the market premises and should not spill over on to the roads,” he said. After the first round of talks, the representatives have sought two day time to consult the issue with the merchants.
