MADURAI: The district unit of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam staged a demonstration here on Tuesday in support of agitating members of the Tamil Nadu Medical Students’ Association and House Surgeons’ Association.

The party cadres condemned the Union Health Minister for the move to extend the duration of the MBBS course by forcing compulsory rural service.

Speaking on the occasion, urban district secretary of the party, Sellur K. Raju, said that the move mooted by the Ministry had disheartened medical students.

Such an action would only prevent students from opting medical course when there were plenty of opportunities available in engineering subjects, he said.

The party functionaries also raised slogans against the Union Minister and vouched to stand by the demands of the medical students.

They were also against making rural service compulsory. For they said, any compelled service would not fetch desired results.

The demonstrators condemned the State Government for its inaction in this regard and accused Tamil Nadu Chief Minister of cheating the students. More than 200 cadres participated in the agitation. Former Member of Parliament, V.V. Rajan Chellappa, MLAs, A.K. Bose, R. Samy, I. Mahendran, and former Minister, Valarmathi Jebaraj, took part.
