Give equal rate: Farmers protesting in front of the Tiruchi railway junction on Tuesday. TIRUCHI: Demanding enhancement of minimum support price for paddy to Rs. 1,000 a quintal, similar to that of wheat, several hundreds of farmers belonging to the CPI-affiliated Tamil Nadu Vivasaya Sangam courted arrest while picketing buses and trains in Tiruchi, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Pudukkottai districts. About 360 farmers led by State general secretary of Sangam Durai Manickam were arrested at the entrance of the Railway Junction when they were proceeding for train picketing. The farmers assailed the policy of lesser fixation of price for paddy by Rs. 300 compared to wheat lamenting that the cost of cultivation of paddy was higher. They were released after three hours. Trains cancelledThe Railways cancelled and rescheduled the following trains on Tuesday in view of the agitation carried out by Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam affiliated to both the Communist parties in the central districts. According to the Public Relations Officer of the Tiruchi Division of the Southern Railway, C. K. Sivaraj, the train No. 865 Mayiladuturai – Tiruturaipoondi passenger and train No. 862 Karaikudi – Mayiladuturai passenger were fully cancelled. The train No. 863 Mayiladuturai –Karaikudi passenger was cancelled between Mayiladuturai and Adiramapattinam. The train No. 6702 Karaikudi – Tiruturaipoondi passenger was cancelled between Adiramapattinam and Tiruturaipoondi. Train No. 873 Tiruvarur-Tiruchi passenger had a 25 minute delayed departure. ThanjavurA total of 1,798 farmers, including 248 women, belonging to the Sangam were arrested from various parts of the district for picketing buses at 32 places and train picketing at three places. TiruvarurAt Tiruvarur, the scale of agitation was larger and bus services were disrupted in many parts. Groups of farmers picketed buses at 44 places and trains in nine places. Bus picketing continued till evening in nearly 20 places in the district. At Tirutharapoondi, local MLA Ulaganathan was arrested along with his supporters when he attempted to picket a train. At Mannargudi, the agitation was led by local MLA Sivapuniyam. NagapattinamNearly 2,000 farmers and cadres from both the Communist parties were arrested in various parts of the district while picketing buses and trains. The agitation was led by CPM MLA of Nagapattinam V. Marimuthu. PudukottaiAlangudi MLA Rajasekaran led the farmers’ agitation in Pudukkottai town. Demonstrations were conducted in nine places in the district.
