AIADMK flays move to introduce compulsory rural service

Special Correspondent

strident protest: K.A. Sengottaiyan, AIADMK headquarters secretary, addressing party cadres at a demonstration in Adukkamparai near Vellore on Tuesday.

VELLORE: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi was shedding false tears over the plight of medicos in Tamil Nadu who were agitating against the Central government’s move to introduce one year compulsory rural service for the students on completion of their five-and-a-half year MBBS course, while in fact the State government has already given assent to the Centre’s proposal, former Minister and All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam headquarters secretary K.A. Sengottaiyan has said.

Addressing a demonstration outside the Government Vellore Medical College (GVMC) at Adukkamparai near here on Tuesday, Mr. Sengottaiyan said Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Anbumani Ramadoss had gone on record stating that the Centre had proposed the one-year compulsory rural service for medical students only after getting the assent of the State Governments.

Mr. Karunanidhi had failed to explain to the Union Minister at that time the difficulties the poor students would face on account of the extension of the MBBS course by one year, Mr. Sengottaiyan said.

Earlier, AIADMK partymen raised slogans condemning the Central Government, and the Tamil Nadu Government for its “failure” to oppose the move.

Former Ministers K. Pandurangan, R. Vilvanathan and S. Ramachandran, AIADMK Vellore east district secretary L.K.M.B. Vasu, Vellore west district secretary K.C. Veeramani, former MLAs P. Neelakandan, M.S. Chandrasekharan, K.M. Kalaichelvi and C.M. Sooryakala and former AIADMK district secretaries M. Moorthy and V.R. Chandran participated in the agitation.

In Chennai, AIADMK MLA Sekar Babu led the protest.
