3,200 detonators seized, five held

RAMANATHAPURAM: The police on Tuesday seized 3,200 detonators an arrested five persons in this connection at Rameswaram.
Early in the day, a police party found two persons moving in a suspicious manner at Semmamadam, a seashore hamlet. When the police approached them, they fled leaving behind a parcel, which contained 32 bundles, each containing 100 detonators. There were also 21 gelatine sticks and some fuse wires.
After a chase, the police secured Densingh (50) of Rameswaram. The other person, Balamurugan, escaped.
Based on the information provided by Densingh, the police arrested A. Chandran (37), S. Karunanidhi (39), S. Chandran (49) and S. Raju (67), all hailing from Rameswaram. They were charged under the Explosive Substances Act.
Superintendent of Police R. Thirugnanam told The Hindu that the explosives might have been procured from Madurai. Investigation was on to find out the dealers.
Asked whether the explosives were bound for Sri Lanka, Mr. Thirugnanam said the accused had told the police during interrogation that they smuggled them for “fishing purposes.” All aspects of the case would be investigated.
