SHRC recommends reinvestigation

K.T. Sangameswaran

Mysterious death of autorickshaw driver

Yuvaraj was missing since August 2003

Interim payment of Rs.50,000 recommended

CHENNAI: The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has recommended a reinvestigation by the Crime Branch Criminal Investigation Department into the death of an autorickshaw driver four years ago. Passing orders on a complaint filed by the wife of the deceased, a Commission Bench, comprising the Chairperson, Justice A.S. Venkatachalamoorthy and Members, Justice S. Thangaraj and K. Mariappan, recommended that the Government make an interim payment of Rs.50,000 to the family of the deceased.

In her complaint, Shanthi of Perambur said her husband Yuvaraj, an autorickshaw driver, was missing since August 2003.

She was informed by a policeman that following an accident involving two autorickshaws, there was a quarrel between them and Yuvaraj was in the Vellavedu police station and she need not worry.

When she went to the station the next day she was told that her husband’s body was in the KMC Hospital. She was also informed that her husband met with an accident and was found lying near the autorickshaw by a woman constable.

The complainant submitted that Yuvaraj carried photostat copies of various vehicle documents.

Yet, the police were not able to identify her husband. Narrating the sequence of events, Shanthi requested the Commission to find out what had happened.

No answer

The respondent, Sub-Inspector Vellavedu police station, who has since retired, filed a counter and also deposed before the Commission. It said several questions, including as to when Yuvaraj died, arose for which no answer was found in the material available on record.

After considering the matter, the Commission was of the view that the only way to find answers was to suggest a CB CID investigation.
