NEW DELHI: The Union Cabinet’s Committee on Economic Affairs has approved the second phase of the Krishna Drinking Water Supply Project, which is designed to augment the water supply in Hyderabad and its neighbourhood by 90 million gallons per day. The project, which is being implemented under the Centre’s Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission, is estimated to cost Rs. 817 crores. It would help increase the per capital availability of water from 80 litres per day to 150 litres per day in the city and municipalities. The project would cater to the requirements of the Hyderabad International Airport, FAB City and the hardware, textile and IT sectors. Chaired by Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, the CCEA also cleared the proposal for the integrated Handlooms Development Scheme as a centrally sponsored plan scheme during the 11th plan. It also plans to meet the committed liabilities of four erstwhile schemes of the Textiles Ministry – Deendayal Hathkarga Protsahan Yojana, Integrated Handlooms Training Project, Workshed-cum-Housing Scheme and the Integrated Handlooms Cluster Development Scheme. The scheme is expected to help weavers develop new designs and diversify into new products. Among other things, it has provisions for the upgradation of looms, improving the skills of weavers and establishing suitable workplaces and market support systems. In-principle approvalThe CCEA also gave its in-principle approval for a Dedicated Multi-Modal High Axle Load Freight Corridor project on the eastern and western corridors of the Railways at an estimated cost of Rs. 11,859 crores and Rs. 16,592 crores respectively. On the eastern side, the corridor will be from Ludhiana to Sonnagar and on the western side, the corridor will connect Jawaharlal Nehru Port and Tughlakabad. The project is expected to be completed in five years.
