Well done: Joint Director of School Education R. Vanjulavalli presenting certificates to participants at the Children’s Science Congress in Puducherry.

PUDUCHERRY: Shahafaz Ibi cut his foot when he stepped on an oyster shell in the mangroves nearby. The fishermen who accompanied him prevented the student from St. Theresa’s UP School Chalakkara in Mahe from falling into the water.

He went there to collect material for a project for the State-level Children’s Science Congress, organised recently in Puducherry. Along with Veena M.N., Rahul R.S., Nihal Mohammed and Jithul K., he studied the types of mangroves in the Koduvalli and Koyyali river estuaries.

The project was one of six chosen by judges of the competition Raghu and Hemavathi of the Puducherry Science Forum.

The other projects selected were studies conducted on the food habits of termites (Aringar Anna Government HSS, Koonichampet), greenhouse effect on bindis and blackgram (St. Joseph of Cluny School) mosquito population in Lawspet and Thattanchavady (Petit Seminaire HSS), and study of cactus and coconut and value addition in biodiversity (Sri NKC Government School, Kuruchikuppam). These children will take part in the National Science Congress to be held in December.
