Thiruvananthapuram: The Grand Kerala Shopping Festival (GKSF) beginning on December 1 will seek to reinvent Kerala as an international tourist destination and ensure long-term commercial benefits for the State, Principal Secretary, Industries, T. Balakrishnan and Tourism Secretary V. Venu said here on Wednesday. Addressing a press meet, they said the festival was timed to coincide with the tourism and pilgrimage seasons and Christmas and New Year festivities. They said the 45-day event would offer discount deals and lucky draws with prizes totalling Rs.10 crore, to attract domestic and foreign tourists and offer them a new experience. “It will be a golden opportunity for traders and retail outlets in the State to establish their presence in the market and tap the growing middle class in the State. The festival will help to promote the ‘Made in Kerala’ brand and enlarge the market for traditional industries like handicrafts and spices as well as manufactured goods. In the long run, it is expected to benefit the tourism sector and give a boost to the economy. Over the next five years, it will be recognised as a global event,” Mr. Balakrishnan said.
