PUDUCHERRY: Chief Minister N. Rangasamy on Wednesday expressed the hope that tourism would be the main source of revenue for the Union Territory in the future.

Speaking to reporters after inaugurating a renovated Le Café coffee shop on Goubert Salai, he said that a lot of tourism-related projects were coming up in Puducherry. The government was acquiring land at Manapet for more projects.

He also hoped that restaurants would be an added attraction to tourists.

Tourism Minister Malladi Krishna Rao said that the government would be calling for a tender for setting up a resort-cum massage centre at an estimated cost of Rs 1.8 crore next to the Seagulls Restaurant on near the old port. Renovation work on the restaurant is expected to be completed within a month, he added.

Government buildings

Tourism Secretary A. Anbarasu told reporters that the administration had decided to shift all government buildings on Goubert Avenue in a phased manner.

The staff at Chunnambar beach resort were being given an incentive based on the target they achieved every day and that scheme would also be extended to the 25 staff members of Le Café. Marc Torno, an advisor and expert in setting up and running cafes, had been appointed for a year on a contract basis to help develop the café, he added.

Tourism Director Mohammed Mansoor said the café would be an attraction for tourists, a place where they could relax and enjoy the ambience.

The renovated coffee house has a tourist information centre and would sell terracotta items, ceramic pottery and small mementoes.
