Hindu Aikyavedi, VHP oppose Devaswom ordinance

Special Correspondent

Say government showing undue haste

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Hindu Aikyavedi and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) have demanded the government to desist from promulgating an ordinance for forming the Malabar Devaswom Board without taking the community into confidence.

Aikyavedi general secretary E.S. Biju and VHP State president B.R. Balaraman told reporters here on Wednesday that the government was trying to promulgate the ordinance in haste. There was no exigency to issue the ordinance without taking the community into confidence. The Hindu organisations have presented a draft proposal for the formation of the board to Governor R.L. Bhatia, Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan, and Devaswom Minister G. Sudhakaran. The Minister had agreed to hold a meeting of Hindu organisations to elicit their views on the ordinance. The LDF was trying to push its hidden agenda by issuing the ordinance, they said and urged the Governor not to sign the ordinance.

The decision to include nine members in the Board would lead to corruption and nepotism. Elected members of temple advisory committees and a representative of the employee should be included in the board, they said.

TDB flayed

The move to enhance the strength of the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) would also lead to unethical practices. If the government failed to control a three-member Board, it would not be able to control a Board with more members. It would only lead to misuse of the Devaswom funds. The LDF was trying to appease the front partners. TDB failed to provide basic amenities to the Sabarimala pilgrims. The Board members should quit for their failure to provide the facilities for the pilgrims on time, they said.

Kerala Kshetra Samrakshana Samithi organising secretary G.B. Dinachandran, Aikyavedi general secretary V.R. Sathyavan, and Samithi State secretary C.K. Kunhu were also present at the press conference.
