NEW DELHI: The Delhi Metro recorded a heavy rush of passengers at its Pragati Maidan station on the last five days of the India International Trade Fair that ended on Tuesday. The station recorded over one lakh footfalls on all days during the fair and the rider-ship crossed 8 lakh on a single day for the first time during this period.

According to Metro officials, the final rider-ship figure for Pragati Maidan station during the 14-day trade fair was 1,220,015. Almost half of this, 591,978, was recorded from November 23 to 27.

While only 103,333 passengers took the Metro on November 23, the number rose to 122,046 on November 25.

The Delhi Metro also recorded its highest rider-ship across all three lines during the trade fair on November 23 when 813,716 people used the system.

A DMRC official said: “According to a recent commuter survey, 43 per cent of the metro passengers use two or three trains during each trip. This means that the actual train occupancy on November 23 stood at 11.63 lakh.”

The DMRC had made elaborate arrangements to handle the extra passengers at Pragati Maidan station during the trade fair. For the first time at any Delhi Metro station, safety barricades made of stainless steel were erected on the platform towards Dwarka to prevent commuters from falling on to the tracks due to the heavy rush.

Extra token counters were opened, additional metro and security personnel deployed, and the frequency of trains on Line 3 from Indraprastha to Dwarka Sector 9 was reduced to 3.47 minutes from 5 minutes.
