Srinagar: Dense fog crippled air traffic from Srinagar for the third day on Wednesday as the cold wave intensified in the Kashmir Valley and the mercury plunged further to almost five degrees below the freezing point. All 12 flights from the Srinagar international airport, including a special Air India plane scheduled to take Haj pilgrims to Saudi Arabia, were cancelled because of low ground visibility, said a spokesman of the Airports Authority of India. He said only one Jeddah-bound flight had been able to operate while passengers to various destinations across the country have been stranded at the airport for the past three days. The valley, which has been under the grip of icy weather for a week, experienced its coldest day of the season with the mercury dropping to minus 4.8 degrees Celsius on Tuesday night. Day temperature also fell to just 10 degrees C (4 degrees below normal) after a respite over the past few days. The famous Dal Lake in the city was still unaffected by the weather but crusts of ice had formed over most water bodies and water had frozen in the pipes, affecting supply to some areas. Owing to the current spell of the cold wave, the State Government has announced postponement of the daily opening time for schools in the division to 10-30 a.m. - PTI
