“Newspapers have a big role”

MADURAI: Newspapers played a vital role in the development of the country in the post independence period, Collector, S.S. Jawahar, said on Tuesday.

Speaking at a function organised to mark the ‘National Press Day’ here, he said the media had a great influence in creating public opinion.

The American College Principal, T. Chinnaraj Joseph Jaikumar said the media industry had grown over the years and there were at least 5,500 newspapers in the country today.

The Madurai East MLA, N. Nanmaran, also spoke.
