Pathetic condition

This refers to the article “They go in search of jobs, but find abuse” (Nov. 28). That a large number of Sri Lankan women migrant workers who leave for West Asia return prematurely in distress is appalling.

Worse, many who continue to work face abuse, non-payment of salary, and other forms of exploitation. Arab countries deny migrant domestic workers equal protection under their laws and limit the ability of workers to change employers. Without clear legal rights, domestic workers have little choice when they experience abuse.

The Sri Lankan government earns huge foreign exchange that comes from migrant labour. Labour migration also lessens unemployment in Sri Lanka. The government should ensure that the workers are trained and are not exploited by unscrupulous agents. Increased cooperation between the Sri Lankan foreign ministry and the countries of employment is essential to arrange rescue of domestic workers in distress, create effective complaint mechanisms, and to enforce mutually recognised contracts that provide real protection.

T. Marx,

Karaikal
