TEHRAN: Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Wednesday the U.S.-brokered conference was a “failure” and that Israel was doomed to “collapse,” lashing out at the Annapolis gathering that many saw as aimed at isolating Iran. The comments were the first time in months that Mr. Ahmadinejad has used such strong anti-Israeli rhetoric. “It is impossible that the Zionist regime will survive. Collapse is in the nature of this regime because it has been created on aggression, lying, oppression and crime,” said Mr. Ahmadinejad. Many Palestinians appeared disappointed that their leaders are returning “empty handed” from Annapolis. Several Palestinians said their leaders would have a hard time explaining to their constituents why they agreed on a joint statement with Israel at the last moment without any reference to their key demands like a time-table to settle disputes and reference to determining the boundaries of a Palestinian state and the status of Jerusalem, holy to three major religions.— AP, PTI
