KARUR: The continued commitment of State Government in honouring promises of welfare schemes made by ruling DMK on the eve of the elections is a testimony before the people, Information Minister Parithi Ilamvazhuthi said at Nedungur near here on Tuesday. Speaking after launching the third phase of distribution of free colour television sets and distribution of free LPG stoves and connections to beneficiaries at Nedungur in K. Paramathi panchayat union of Karur district, Mr. Ilamvazhuthi observed that when Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, as DMK president, promised to implement various welfare schemes such as distribution of free television sets, land, and other things for the benefit of the downtrodden and the poor, several parties doubted if the schemes would ever take off. Worse still, they even said that the promises would turn out to be empty. Putting to rest their doubts, the DMK, after assuming power, has been delivering consistently on the promises made on poll-eve. The series of welfare schemes and development measures being formulated and implemented by the DMK regime has gone to prove the right intentions of the DMK regime, the Minister said. Also, the process of procuring television sets for distribution to people was transparent and gave no scope for malpractices. Procurement was being made to the satisfaction of all and through a transparent tender process, he added. Collector T.N. Venkatesh assured the public that the district administration was striving to ensure that all welfare and development schemes of the State Government duly reached the beneficiaries in Karur district. Colour television sets have been distributed to 39,723 beneficiaries in 55 panchayats at a cost of Rs. 10.88 crore. In the third phase, 58,000 colour television sets were to be distributed, he added. A total of 520 persons got television sets on the occasion. Similarly, free LPG connections and stoves have been distributed to 8,220 families so far. The aim was to distribute another 4,932 connections before December end, Mr. Venkatesh said. MP K.C. Palanisamy, MLAs M.A. Khaleelur Rahman (Aravakurichi), P. Kamaraj (Krishnarayapuram) and R. Manikkam (Kulithalai), former MLA and DMK district secretary Vasuki Murugesan, District panchayat chairperson Poovai Ramesh Babu, District Revenue Officer Jawahar Shanthakumar and others spoke. TiruvarurFree colour television sets were distributed to 566 beneficiaries and gas stoves with LPG connections to 239 persons at a function held at Keezha Thirupalakudi village near Mannargudi on Tuesday. Distributing the freebies, Minister for Dairy Development U. Mathivannan said 42,016 families have been provided free television sets in the district. During the current year, 15,036 gas stoves with LPG connections would be provided in the district. He also said free house site pattas were also being distributed in the district. Collector M.Chandrasekaran and other officials participated in the function. PudukottaiState Fisheries Minister K. P. P. Sami distributed free colour TVs to 3,569 beneficiaries and free gas stoves with LPG connections to 500 others at a function held at Aranthangi on Tuesday. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Sami said the present regime was implementing all the poll promises. The Chief Minister had allotted a sum of Rs. 1,000 crore for undertaking development works in tsunami-hit areas. While Rs. 2.38 lakh was earmarked for the construction of each house for the tsunami victims, Rs. 30,000 was being sanctioned as revolving fund to the women SHGs and another Rs. 200 crore for sanctioning loans with subsidy, he said. He assured steps for provision of additional assistance to tsunami-hit fishermen of Pudukottai shortly who did not get the same so far. The Minister also recalled the prompt action taken by the Chief Minister which enabled the release of 97 fishermen of Nagapattinam along with 17 mechanised boats from Sri Lankan custody. Collector D. Uthirakkumaran in his presidential address said a total of 6,848 gas stoves with LPG connections were distributed in the district during last year and it has been targeted to provide 20,640 stoves during the current year. About 51,000 TVs have been distributed to the beneficiaries in the district so far, he added. District Revenue Officer G. Prakasam and Udayam Shanmugam, MLA, spoke. NagapattinamAll mud roads in the villages in the State will soon be asphalted and the Government had sent a proposal to National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) for an assistance of Rs.222 crore, said M.P.Saminathan, Minister for Highways, on Tuesday. Distributing free colour television sets to 1,980 beneficiaries and free domestic LPG gas stoves and gas connection to 343 families at a function in Punganur village near Sirkazhi, the Minister said that 555 km of new roads and 48 bridges were built in the last one-and-a-half years in the State at a cost of Rs.212 crore. Mr Saminathan said that a 47-km coastal road would be laid shortly connecting Pudupattinam, Manavamedu, Thirumullaivasal and Chinnangudi in Nagapattinam district at a cost of Rs.50 crore. Collector Tenkasi S. Jawahar, who presided over the function, said that 58,498 colour television sets had so far been received for free distribution to beneficiaries 127 panchayats of which 54,012 colour TVs were distributed to the beneficiaries in 119 village panchayats. He said that the target was to distribute free LPG stoves and free gas connection to 19,959 beneficiaries during the current year in the district and said that 8,088 families were benefited last year in the district. ThanjavurA sum of Rs. 92 crore has been sanctioned as cooperative loans to 56,000 farmers of the districts of Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam during this year, State Cooperation Minister Ko. Si. Mani has said. Speaking at a function held at Tiruvaiyaru to distribute free colour television sets and gas stoves with LPG connections on Tuesday, Mr. Mani said the State Government was providing Rs. 50 more with the paddy procurement price. The Chief Minister has also written to the Centre to increase the procurement price. Collector C. Vijayaraj Kumar in his presidential address said the government decision’s to write off farm loans had benefited 1.22 lakh farmers in the district. He said so far over one lakh families have been provided with the colour TVs in the district and 9,862 beneficiaries with gas stoves and LPG connections. Two acre lands have been distributed to 4,796 beneficiaries and free house site pattas to 2,989 beneficiaries, he added. Durai Chandrasekaran and Mahesh Krishnasamy, both MLAs, and Chairperson of District Panchayat Selvi Sivagnanam spoke.
