Expo on higher education for school students

Staff Reporter

It is aimed at creating awareness of science and humanities

subjects and

career prospects

MADURAI: An exhibition on higher education opportunities for school students is being organised by the Lady Doak College here from November 29 to December 1 as part of its Diamond Jubilee year celebrations.

The three-day expo to be organised in college campus, which is open to parents also, is aimed at creating awareness among students at school level about science and humanities subjects and the career prospects available for them after pursuing those courses.

Talking to reporters on Tuesday, Nirmala Jeyaraj, Principal, said that the exhibition titled “Cognizance 2007” is open to school students of classes VIII to Plus Two on the first two days and to the public/parents on the third day.

Balanced approach

“There has to be a balanced approach to higher education. But in today’s scenario there is an undue emphasis on IT-related courses. Our exhibition will benefit students and parents in choosing right courses,” she said.

Ms. Jeyaraj said that students of Corporation, Government and matriculation schools have been invited to visit the exhibition and officials of School Education Department also would attend.

The expo would provide all information on variety of courses offered by the college and the scope of arts/humanities courses. Each department would have exhibits providing information about courses, their relevance, employability and placement prospects.

Holistic view

Stating that there should be a holistic view on higher education, the Principal said that stakeholders must realise that all disciplines, particularly basic sciences, are essential for any country and IT courses alone were not enough.

The college Placement Officer, D.J.C.Barnes, pointed out that right now there is a lopsided interest among students/parents about courses and this exhibition will provide adequate information/options available.

S.S. Jawahar, District Collector, will inaugurate the expo that goes with a theme “relevance and utility of higher education.”
