TAMBARAM: The Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) Workshop of Southern Railway in Tambaram has been certified as an ISO 9001:2000 institution. The recognition came recently, and a function to formally hand over the certificate would be held on Thursday evening.

The certification, officials of the Southern Railway said, was a recognition of the commitment to quality at the workshop, which was inaugurated in 1931. All works pertaining to broad gauge EMUs, starting from inspection to overhauling of the coaches, are done under one roof.

Officials said the South Indian Railway Company launched electric trains on metre gauge from Chennai Beach to Tambaram in 1931. This was credited as the first electric train suburban service in the country. A workshop to maintain the coaches and electric locomotives was started simultaneously.

It was modernised and expanded at a cost of Rs. 28 crore in March 2005, after completion of gauge conversion a year earlier. During the metre gauge days, the eight cars (compartments or coaches) could carry more than 1,200 passengers whereas the present nine-car BG rakes can carry more than 1,800, while the 12-car rakes can carry 2,500 passengers.

The workshop takes care of all the 25 rakes that operate on the Chennai Beach – Tambaram – Chengalpattu – Tirumalpur sector, which comprises 241 daily services. The workshop has a total area of 89,325 square metres, and more than 850 employees ensure that the coaches are clean, safe and comfortable.

The ISO certification has been given by Chennai-based ICRS Management Systems. It reads that the “Quality Management Systems was assessed and conforms to ISO 9001:2002.”

During an audit, it was revealed that the workshop had clearly documented and was able to “produce objective evidences” of work done there, representatives from the private company said. The BG EMU Workshop made a direct service impact on lakhs of commuters every day, as their safety and comfort depended on quality management practices and working systems followed there, they added.
