Police crack down on sellers of fake shoes

They bought a few pairs and sent them to companies abroad


Two police teams raid 16 shops and three godowns

The shoes may have reached India from Nepal by road


BANGALORE: In a series of raids on Wednesday, the Central Crime Branch sleuths recovered a large number of fake shoes from shops in Gandhinagar. The CCB sleuths recovered 4,000 pairs of shoes estimated at Rs. 2.68 crore, which is biggest among the recoveries made by the police.

The raids were conducted in shops located in National Market, Hongkong Market and City Centre and a godown in Hindustan Hotel complex, all in Gandhinagar. The police raided another godown located in a residential complex in Susheela Road of Kalasipalyam. They have arrested 19 persons.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) B.R. Ravikante Gowda, the police purchased a few pairs of shoes from the shops and had sent it to the companies in Indonesia and Nepal for their opinion. The companies such as Nike, Adidas and Puma wrote back stating the shoes were fake. The police also confirmed that the shops were selling the shoes without having any authorised license.

Two teams were formed and raids were conducted across 16 shops and three godowns. The shoes were being sold without any bills for about Rs. 5,000. “These shoes might have been sent from Nepal by road,” Mr. Gowda said. The police have written to the Commercial Taxes Department and get more details about the trade. Letter had been written to the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike about the use of godowns, he said.

The police gave the names of the accused as Nawaz (22), Bhasir (45), Rameez (22), Aziz (22), Mohammed Riyaz (21), Abdul Rehman (25), Shakeer (27), Syed Hakim (30), Sarpat Raj (21), Jamal (19), Shabbir (21), Nasir (21), Girish (26), Hussain (28), Shahid (28), Afzal (28), Sadiq (21), Bhadruddin (27) and Musareed (22). The police are searching Saddiq and Faisal who were stated to be the main accused in the fake shoes sale racket.

The CCB has registered a case before the Upparpet and Kalasipalyam police stations.
