KOCHI: Extensive programmes have been drawn up for Ernakulam District to observe World AIDS Day, which falls on December 1, District Collector A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish said at a press conference here on Wednesday. The message for this year is “Stop AIDS. Keep the Promise – Leadership.” An intercollegiate quiz was held at St. Albert’s College on Wednesday. A seminar on “Panchayat Raj and HIV/AIDS preventive action” will be held at Priyadarshini Hall at Kakkanad on Friday. A function to put red ribbon, a universal way of expressing solidarity with the HIV-infected, will be held at the Collector’s camp office on December 1. A rally to spread awareness of AIDS will be taken out from the High Court junction to the Maharaja’s College auditorium in the evening. The rally will culminate in a public meeting, which will be inaugurated by Mayor Mercy Williams. District panchayat president P.S. Shyla will preside over the function. Sebastian Paul, MP, will light the lamp. Mr. Hanish will deliver the main speech. K.V. Thomas, MLA, will administer the oath. Deputy Mayor C.K. Manisankar will give away prizes. Programmes will be carried out with the cooperation of various non-governmental and voluntary organisations, the Health Department and other government departments, District Medical Officer K.T. Remani said.
