Retain Upper Sanatorium: Cherian Philip

Special Correspondent

Says it will destroy the natural beauty and biodiversity of the region

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala Tourism Development Corporation (KTDC) Chairman Cherian Philip has urged the government not to part with land from the Upper Sanatorium at Ponmudi for the proposed Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology. A press note quoting him here on Wednesday said the government move to provide land for the institute, under the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), would destroy the tourism potential of the area.

“The Upper Sanatorium is a scenically beautiful area from where the Western Ghats and the Arabian Sea are visible. The whole area will be out of bounds for tourists, once it is handed over to the ISRO. The construction of buildings for the space institute will destroy the natural beauty of the location and the rich biodiversity of the region,” he said in the release.

Mr. Philip said KTDC had taken up a project to set up a premium resort near the Upper Sanatorium. “The government has handed over the old cottages built by the Tourism Department and the new ones constructed with Central assistance. KTDC has also plans to modify the cottages and landscape the surroundings,” he added.
