NEW DELHI: To strengthen the electricity transmission network in the New Delhi Municipal Council area and install a state-of-the-art real-time monitoring system, the NDMC signed two agreements with the Power Grid Corporation of India here on Wednesday.

The agreements were signed in the presence of Union Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and NDMC Chairman Parimal Rai among others.

Under the agreement, Power Grid will execute projects for construction of a total of nine 66kV and 33kV GIS sub-stations, up-grade the existing 33kV substations, lay underground cabling works and augment the transformer capacity. A high-tech system named SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) is also being installed to improve continuity of electricity supply. All these schemes are estimated to be completed by Power Grid within a maximum period of 30 months at an estimated cost of Rs.192 crore.

Describing the agreements as a step in the right direction, the Chief Minister said: “This step was not only needed but was imminent as New Delhi is not only the Capital of the country but also the most beautiful part of the country. The agreement with Power Grid would help in making the electricity system more efficient and effective as well as minimise electricity losses.”

“The SCADA system will now allow us to see faults occurring in the network anywhere in the NDMC area from just inside a room and allow us to take immediate action and correct the electricity fault,” she added.

The schemes have been handed over for execution to Power Grid by the NDMC as part of its ambitious Rs.650-crore project to overhaul and revamp its obsolete electricity infrastructure in a phased manner by 2021.

Congratulating the NDMC and Power Grid, the Power Minister said: “A right step has been taken to privatise Delhi’s distribution system which would not only result in reduced losses but also set an example for the rest of the country.”
