MCD meeting marred by protests

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi Standing Committee meeting on Wednesday was marred yet again by protests by the Congress councillors alleging that the Bharatiya Janata Party had failed in discontinuing the sealing drive in the Capital.

Leader of the Opposition J. K. Sharma said whatever efforts the BJP was apparently putting in to rescue professional from the harassment of sealing was a mere “eyewash”.

Mr. Sharma also condemned repeated acts of violence being indulged in by the BJP councillors. “The BJP does not know what the democratic way of functioning is,” he said.

Teachers protest

Meanwhile, Town Hall on Wednesday was also witness to a protest demonstration by teachers of MCD-run schools. The teachers were raising their voice against the recent manhandling of one of their colleagues by Shiv Vihar BJP councillor Manju Tyagi.

Later, the teachers moved their demonstration to Pant Marg near Gol Dak Khana where senior BJP functionaries Shatrughan Sinha, V. K. Malhotra and Harsh Vardhan were holding an “etiquette” class for their councillors.

The teachers demanded immediate suspension of Manju Tyagi and compensation for the injured teacher. MCD Education Committee chairman Prithviraj Sahni reportedly assured the teachers’ union representative Ram Krishna Puniya that the party would ensure prompt redress of their grievances and prevent further such incidents taking place.

Mr. V. K. Malhotra later said though the councillors had been given strict instructions to behave themselves, the fault usually lay with both the parties concerned.

Party honchos also reportedly advised the councillors to put a brake on their skirmishes because in the age of the Internet it did not take much time for disreputable information to sully the image of the entire party.
