HYDERABAD: Large scale research projects on major health problems in the country, including disease-specific initiatives would be undertaken by ‘The George Institute, India’ in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical research (ICMR) and the University of Sydney’s faculty of medicine. The George Institute for International Health (GIIH), a non-profit health research institute with head office in Sydney, launched on Wednesday the George Institute’s operations in India, with Hyderabad as base. A Memorandum of Understanding for the tripartite tie-up was inked by representatives of respective institutions here on Wednesday. S. K. Bhattacharya, Additional Director-General, ICMR, Lalit Dandona, senior Director, George Institute, India, and Bruce G. Robinson, Dean, Faculty of Medicine, Sydney University, signed the MoU.Prof. Dandona said the main objective of GIIH is to provide solutions to major global health problems through research, policy and training initiatives. It is currently operating in 40 countries. He said the research initiatives in the country would focus on diseases of heart, kidneys, HIV, accidents and injuries, among others. Public health and clinical research and other important area of mutual benefit would also be covered. Mr.Bhattacharya said that there are 29 institutes under ICMR, including 20 disease-specific ones, and added that the collaboration would be unique. Former Director-General, ICMR, N.K. Ganguly, mooted the idea of an Indo-Australian Health fund. Professor Bruce Robinson said that it is also planning to tap assistance from India-Australia Fund established jointly by the two Governments with a corpus of 20 million Australian dollars.
