Kalam’s appeal to rural banks

HONOURING THE GUEST: M. S. Ananth, Director, IIT-Madras, presenting a memento to former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, at a function in Chennai on Wednesday.

CHENNAI: Former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam on Wednesday appealed to banks in rural areas to provide capital to innovators who transform the fortunes of poor communities through sustainable and scalable enterprises.

Presenting the 2007 L-RAMP awards for excellence, he said entrepreneurial skills of such innovators should be encouraged. “I appeal to the local banks to encourage such innovators, which will help not only in sustaining their ventures but also in the marketability of the innovations that will help the needy sections.”

He also urged organisations behind the L-RAMP awards to seek the support of banks. The awards were instituted by the Lemelson Recognition and Mentoring Programme (L-RAMP), a joint initiative of Indian Institute of Technology-Madras and the Rural Innovations Network supported by The Lemelson Foundation, U.S. Commending the efforts of the Rural Innovations Network and IIT-Madras and its faculties for extending technological support, Dr. Kalam said the core-competence of young innovators should be nurtured and adequate value addition provided in logistics and marketing. Dr.Kalam presented the awards to innovators under different categories. Each award comprised a trophy, a certificate of appreciation and prize money.

Awardees

The awardees were M. Lalitha (category-woman); G. Ravichandran, K. Arvind, R. Sathyanarayanan, S. Karthikeyan and T.V. Dhananjayan (young); M. Mohamed Gany, R. Siva Saravanan, M. Christopher, M. Parthasarathy and M. Mani (grassroots); M.J. Prabu (media) Agriculture Correspondent, The Hindu, and Sanjit Bunker Roy (lifetime achievement).

IIT-Madras Director M.S. Ananth said the institution was proud of its association with the innovators.

T.T. Narendran, Dean, IC & SR, and chairperson of Advisory Board, L-Ramp, said the awards would help to motivate more persons to turn their innovations into sustainable and scalable enterprises.

R. Nagarajan, principal coordinator, L-RAMP, Paul Basil, Chief Executive Officer, Rural Innovations Network, and Anand Krishnaswamy, consultant of Lemelson Foundation, spoke.
