THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Centre is yet to respond to the State’s plea for Central intervention in the Mullaperiyar issue in view of the apprehensions about the safety of the dam. Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan told the media after Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting that the Centre had not yet replied to the communication from the State government. Panel reportAn expert committee appointed by the State government had reported that the main dam and the baby dam at Mullaperiyar could subside on account of piping of water through the foundations of the dams. This would cause a catastrophe. The State had brought this to the notice of the Central government and the Tamil Nadu government. It had also taken preliminary steps to build a new dam downstream to replace the old dams. However, Tamil Nadu objected to the move.
