Border patrolling will be increased, says Patil

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: More security posts will come up along the Nepal and Bhutan borders and patrolling will be increased to improve policing on porous international borders, Home Minister Shivraj Patil said on Wednesday. More battalions of the Sashastra Seema Bal would also be raised to step up vigil.

Mr. Patil was speaking in the Rajya Sabha during the debate on the Sashastra Seema Bal Bill, 2006, seeking approval to make the SSB a legal armed force of the Union. The Bill was passed by the House.

Mr. Patil said the Bill would help the force function in the same manner as other para-military forces. Considering the nature and purpose of the SSB and the experience gained during the last four decades, it was felt that the SSB should be regulated by a separate self-contained statute providing for its special needs.
