Tata Steel to have new organisational structure

Special Correspondent

KOLKATA: As part of its ambition to become one of the top steel companies in the world, Tata Steel on Wednesday announced its decision to put in place from January 1, 2008 a new organisational structure.

A company statement said that the new organisation became necessary as the Tata Steel group now has two entities since the Corus takeover. One is Tata Steel (including Tata Steel Thailand and Natsteel Asia) and the other is the Corus group.

While Ratan Tata, Chairman of Tata Steel, will continue to chair the strategy and integration committee, Jim Leng, Philipe Varin, Rauke Henstra and Jean Sebastian Jacques of Corus would be on the committee along with Tata Steel men like B. Muthuraman, Hemant Nerurkar, Tridibesh Mukherjee and Koushik Chatterjee.

A group centre is being created for five functions that are to be performed with a common approach across the Tata Steel group. These functions are: technology and integration, finance, strategy, corporate relations and communications and global minerals since raw material security is now a major issue.

The executives responsible for these functions will report to the managing director of Tata Steel and the CEO of Corus. The executives are: Tridibesh Mukherjee, who is appointed as Group Director, Technology & Integration; Koushik Chatterjee will be the group Chief Financial Officer; Jean Sebastien Jacques has been appointed as Group Director, Strategy; Manzer Hussain as Group Director, Communications; while Arun D. Baijal is appointed as Group Director, Global Minerals. It may be mentioned here that Mr. Mukherjee had retired from his post of Deputy Managing Director (Steel), Tata Steel, on October 31. He was brought back earlier this month as a non executive director. Tata Steel and Corus entities will have executive committees chaired by the Managing Director, B. Muthuraman, and CEO, Philippe Varin, respectively.

A joint executive committee for the Tata Steel group will meet every quarter to review the overall performanceand will be co-chaired by the MD of Tata Steel and the CEO of Corus.
