Booked for demanding bribe

NEW DELHI: A Delhi Police assistant sub-inspector and a lawyer have been booked by the Central Bureau of Investigation on charges of demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs.5,000 from a man to help him secure bail in a case. The policeman, who is still absconding, has been suspended.

The CBI received a complaint alleging that an ASI posted with the Krishna Nagar police station was demanding money to help a man obtain bail in a case involving a bailable offence.

Acting on the complaint, CBI sleuths on Tuesday laid a trap in the Karkardooma courts premises where the accused, ASI Khushi Ram, allegedly asked the complainant to pay Rs. 5,000 to a lawyer. Soon after the money allegedly changed hands, the CBI officials rounded up the lawyer, but the ASI managed to give them the slip.

Thinking that the lawyer was being “abducted” by some people, some of his colleagues intervened and had an altercation with the CBI officials. Subsequently the police were called in.

The CBI has contacted the Delhi police asking them to direct ASI Khushi Ram to cooperate in the investigations.
