Delhi plans to set up evening courts

New Delhi: To tackle the problem of pending cases in the trial courts in the Capital, Delhi Government is in the process of setting up evening courts.

The concept of evening courts was first mooted at the conference of Chief Ministers and Chief Justices of High Courts in the Capital last year with Gujarat and Tamil Nadu already taking the lead in the matter.

Sources told PTI here that the proposal chalked out by the Delhi High Court is under the State Government’s consideration and is all set to get the green signal.

Yesterday, the proposal was discussed in a meeting chaired by Lieutenant Governor Tejendra Khanna, who is understood to have given his nod to the fund to be required for setting up these courts.

As per plan, the courts to be established in consultation with the Delhi High Court, will be on the line of Gujarat where evening courts are running successfully.

The courts will operate from 5.30 pm to 7.30 pm.

“There will be no added burden on the exchequer given that existing infrastructures will be utilised ,” the sources said. It is hoped that these evening courts would lead to quick disposal of around 2.5 lakhs to 3 lakhs cases. PTI
