NEW DELHI: In view of the notice issued by the National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions (NCMEI) to Delhi University on a petition alleging three illegal appointments at St. Stephen’s College, including that of the Principal, the University has sought some explanations on the issue. The University had recently written to the Chairman of the Governing Body and Supreme Council of St. Stephen’s College, Bishop Sunil Kumar Singh, seeking explanations on the matter of appointments. “The Chairman has responded to the letter. The Supreme Council is seized of the matter,” said Principal Valson Thampu on Wednesday. However, Mr. Singh could not be contacted for his comments on his response to the University’s letter. “Not aware”The college media adviser, Vinod Chowdhury, claimed he was “not aware” of any such communication between the University and St. Stephen’s College. The University Dean of Colleges, Nayanjyot Lahiri, said since “the matter was between the University and the college”, she did not wish to speak on it. In October, NCMEI had issued notices to Delhi University, Chairman of the Governing Body and Supreme Council of St. Stephen’s College and the University Grants Commission on a petition alleging illegal appointments of college Principal Valson Thampu, Vice-Principal M. S. Frank and Bursar N. Raghunathan. As per the petition filed by one Sheetal P. Singh, the Supreme Council’s appointment of Mr. Thampu as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) was illegal, arbitrary and wholly unjustified The petitioner has alleged that Mr. Thampu continued to hold dual positions -- as OSD of the college and a member of NCMEI for over four months -- and that he was not qualified to become the Principal as he did not possess the requisite qualification of a Ph.D.
