PATHANAMTHITTA: The burning of electrical cables that supplied power from the transformer to the sewage treatment plant (STP) and incinerator at Cheriyanavattom on Tuesday night badly affected the sewage treatment at Pampa on the foothills of Sabarimala. According to the STP sources, the incident occurred around 9 p.m. on Tuesday reportedly due to high voltage. The pumping of waste to the STP from the collection tank at Pampa Manalpuram was also stopped subsequently. The Pollution Control Board (PCB) officials at Pampa told The Hindu that power supply to the STP was partially restored by 6.30 a.m. on Tuesday. The PCB sources further clarified that only partial treatment of sewage was being carried out at the plant due to certain technical problems with the compressor attached to the aeration chamber. PCB directiveThe PCB District Engineer, Paulus Eapen, has directed the Travancore Devaswom Board to make alternate arrangements to ensure uninterrupted power supply to the STP as well as the incinerator on a war footing. Mr. Eapen said the TDB was yet to comply with the PCB direction to provide a standby generator to give adequate power back-up to the STP.
