CHANDIGARH: Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda launched a contract farming scheme on Thursday to give impetus to agriculture. Mr. Hooda handed over the first Registration Certificate to Jean-Marc Delpon Devaus, Managing Director of SABMiller India, at a function here. The scheme would be launched initially on about 2,500 acres in 28 villages in Farrukh Nagar tehsil, 36 in Pataudi tehsil, six in Jhajjar tehsil, four in Rewari tehsil and five in Gurgaon tehsil for the year 2007-08 for growing barley. Subsequently it would be launched in other parts of the State to improve the lot of farmers. The contract farmers would get the highest market rates prevailing at the time of purchase with a guaranteed minimum purchase price of Rs.800 per quintal, Mr. Hooda disclosed. He said the sponsoring firm would provide inputs to the farmers such as certified quality seeds, techniques and technology besides other related services. The farmer in turn would grow the better-specified quality of produce. Mr. Devaus said his company was committed to improve barley farming in the State.
