Pat for delivery care system

MADURAI: A World Bank team, which is currently visiting southern districts for a mid-term review of the implementation of Tamil Nadu Health Systems Project, was in for a pleasant surprise at a primary health centre (PHC) in Madurai district on Tuesday night.

After visiting various Government hospitals in Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli and Virudhunagar districts, the WB team reached Kallikudi PHC, near Tirumangalam, around 8 p.m. where power supply was off in the village.

As the team entered the health centre, a woman was in labour and nurses were attending to her, thanks to the UPS connection that ensured uninterrupted electricity supply in the operation theatre.

After some time, the woman, who had come from Kamudhi, delivered a girl baby and a little later she spoke to the World Bank team members of how she got benefited from the maternity financial assistance scheme of the State Government.

According to P. Palanikumar, Madurai District Project Coordinator of the TN Health Systems Project, the visiting team was “delighted” at the functioning of the PHC even during a power cut and it appreciated the 24-hour delivery care system in rural areas, he said.

The World Bank team includes Preethi Kudesia (team leader), Sreelatha Rao, Vikram Rajan, Sangeetha Pinto and Atul Mohan, who are consultants.

Michael M. Engalgau, Senior Public Health Specialist in Human Development Unit, South Asia Region, World Bank, also arrived in the city on Wednesday for a review meeting.

P. W. C. Davidar, Special Secretary (Health) and Project Director of Tamil Nadu Health Systems Project, is among the officials from State Government who are briefing the team about the implementation of healthcare projects.

Dr. Palanikumar said on Wednesday that the team members would visit hospitals in Sivaganga, Theni and Madurai districts in the next two days.

The mid-term review was to assess how the funds received from the World Bank were utilised for improvement of public health network and how the health status had improved.
