For the connoisseurs of music

MYSORE: Hindustani musicians will enthral connoisseurs of that genre of music in Mysore on December 1. The Gururao Deshpande Sangeetha Sabha of Bangalore is organising a gala music programme in association with Saptaswara Balaga Trust of Mysore at the Mysore K. Vasudevacharya Bhavan.

Disclosing this to presspersons here on Thursday, Saptaswara Balaga Trust secretary B. Somashekar said that the sabha had been doing laudable service in the field of classical music for the past two-and-a-half decades. The sabha was established in 1982 by musician Pandit Vinayaka Toravi in memory of his guru Gayanacharya Gururao Deshpande, a doyen of the Gwalior Gharana.

The inaugural function was marked by a memorable concert by Gangubai Hangal. Pandit Bhimsen Joshi gave an outstanding concert at the 10th anniversary function of the sabha, Prof. Somashekar said.

The sabha was helping needy music students in purchasing musical instruments and paying tuition fees, Pandit Vinayaka Toravi, president, Gururao Deshpande Sangeetha Sabha, said.

On the other hand, Saptaswara, inspired by the activities of the sabha, was planning to expand its activities.

The December 1 music programme was a step in this direction.

Swami Nityanandji of Sri Ramakrishna Math, Mysore, will be the chief guest. Carnatic musician B.S. Vijayaraghavan will be felicitated.

Pandit Srikanth Deshpande of Pune, grandson of Savai Gandharva and a disciple of Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, will give a concert.
