THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Director of the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) B.N. Suresh is retiring from service on Friday after serving the organisation for 38 years, the VSSC said in a press release on Thursday. Dr. Suresh is also the director of the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology, recently started by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). He will continue to serve ISRO in this capacity. He took over as VSSC director in September 2003, leading several space programmes of the organisation during the last four years. His most important achievement was the Space Capsule Recovery Experiment in January this year, bringing safely back to earth an orbiting satellite. His tenure as VSSC director also witnessed the successful launch of GSLV D2, PSLV C5, GSLV FO1, PSLV C6, PSLV C7 and GSLV FO4. His expertise and prompt action had helped overcome the problems related to the failed GSLV FO2 mission. This led to the successful launch of GSLV FO4 in September this year, the VSSC said. He had held in the VSSC such responsibilities as director of the Control and Guidance Group, director of Inertial Guidance Systems Project, deputy director of Avionics and associate director of Research and Development, before becoming the director of the organisation itself. He has won several awards and honours for his contributions to the Indian space programme. The Union government conferred on him the Padmasree in 2003.
