Palasa-Kasibugga poll litmus test for rival parties Srikakulam: With just a couple of days left for campaigning to come to an end for the Palasa-Kasibugga municipal elections, electioneering has reached a feverish pitch. For both the main political parties in the fray – the Congress and the TDP – the stakes are very high. After registering impressive victory in the Assembly and municipal elections, the Congress lost two elections held subsequently. TDP’s claim The TDP leaders claim that the Congress is losing grip over the voters in the district and that people are thronging back to the TDP for which the district was a bastion till the elections in 2004. A victory in the municipal election will further boost the image of the TDP. On the other hand, a defeat for the Congress for the third time in a row will dent the image of Revenue Minister Dharmana Prasada Rao, who is the key man for the party in the district. That is the reason why the Congress is leaving no stone unturned to ensure a victory in the Paslasa Municipality. Campaign hots upThe campaign is on expected lines. Besides Mr. Prasada Rao, other Ministers K. Rosaiah (Finance), Satrucherla Vijayarama Raju (Forests) and Redya Naik (Tribal Welfare) and party MLAs and MLC are banking on the performance of the government in the last three-and-a-half years. On the other hand, TDP leaders Kinjarapu Yerrannaidu, MP, and Gouthu Shyam Sundar Sivaji, K. Acheyya Naidu and Kalamata Mohana Rao, all MLAs and film star Roja are accusing the government of failing on all fronts. The main problem for the Congress seems to be rebels. There are 25 wards and in at least 10 of them, it faces the problem of rebels, which the Revenue Minister tries to play down as a matter of little consequence. Key issueThe problems being faced by cashewnut workers has also become a political issue, with both the Congress and the TDP blaming each other for closure of 100 cashewnut processing units, rendering thousands of workers jobless. Though there are 74 candidates, including five sponsored by the CPI, in the fray, the fight will mainly be between the TDP and the Congress. In two or three wards, there are strong independent candidates including family members of Duvvada Srinivas, vice-chairman of the ZP. Polling will be held on December 3.
