RIAD to uplift 5,600 villages in State

Job-oriented training programme for rural youth being implemented in a big way

Srikakulam: Minister for Tribal Welfare D.S. Redya Naik on Thursday said that more than 5,600 villages spread over 332 mandals in 18 districts in the State were identified for implementation of Remote and Interior Areas Development (RIAD) scheme for which Rs.1,500 crores was set apart.

Speaking to newsmen at Sitampeta guest house, about 50 km from here, Mr. Redya Naik said that the scheme envisaged provision of drinking water, electricity, schools, pucca roads and a mechanism to solve land disputes in the villages.

A proposal for provision of pucca roads to all identified villages under the Prime Minister’s Gram Swaraj Yojna was sent to the Centre for funds. In Srikakulam district, 15 mandals covering 171 villages were identified for RIDA scheme.

Training programme for youth with a view to providing employment opportunities had also been taken up in a big way. Some 55,000 youth were identified for training and subsequent placements in various jobs.

In Srikakulam district, 589 youths were given training and jobs were provided to 523 persons.

Housing programme

The government had taken up housing programme and there would be great demand for masons and other workers for construction work. Earlier, the Minister laid foundation stone for the government degree college at Sitampeta and distributed mosquito nets to villagers in Panukuvalasa.

On Thursday, he had reviewed works being executed by the engineering and health departments and expressed unhappiness at the slow pace of works. He told them to complete the works as per schedule failing which serious action would be taken.
