Chandy speaks for INL’s cause

Staff Reporter

No plans to move away from LDF, say INL leaders

KASARAGOD: The show of solidarity by Opposition Leader Oommen Chandy at the venue of Indian National League’s protest here against the police has given rise to speculations on the INL and the UDF coming closer in north Kerala, especially in Kasaragod. At the same time, there are rumblings in the UDF, especially in the Indian Union Muslim League, over the overtures made by Mr. Chandy.

Mr. Chandy visited the protest venue on Wednesday and expressed support to the INL’s cause.

The INL, which has stood with the LDF during the last few years though not a coalition partner, is staging a relay satyagraha here alleging that the police failed to protect the life of one of its party workers, Aabid, despite his family filing a complaint at the local police station seeking protection. Aabid, an accused in several criminal cases, was murdered by an armed gang recently.

While the CPI (M) cold shouldered the INL’s demand to take action against the Kasaragod sub-inspector of police, Mr. Chandy demanded that action be taken.

The INL leadership said they had not received justice from the LDF, especially from the CPI (M) in the issue and vowed to continue their agitation with the help of all political parties who supported them.

Meanwhile, sources in IUML said the expression of solidarity made by the Opposition Leader was unwarranted.

The INL worker who had been killed was an a accused in several cases including one in connection with an attack on an IUML leader, party sources said. They pointed out that the murder was a result of rivalry between criminal gangs and no politics was involved in it.

Sections within the Congress pointed out that the Opposition Leader had not been briefed properly on the situations that lead to the murder of Aabid and the party had nothing to gain from interfering in the issue.

INL leaders said though they had dissatisfaction over the functioning of the police in the district, there was no move to withdraw support to the LDF.
