dated November 30, 1957: Spirit of compassion

Mr. Sri Prakasa, Governor of Bombay, called for a twin approach to the problems of vegetarianism “to make sure not to kill more than is absolutely necessary and then to kill in a manner that may inflict the least amount of pain on the victim”, while inaugurating the three day concluding session of the World Vegetarian Congress which opened in Madras on November 28. “This will instil in an ever increasing measure the spirit of true compassion and help in the realisation of the unity of life and the bounden duty of all to respect the same”, he said. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. C. Rajagopalachari cautioned that vegetarianism should not become a caste as it would develop in the vegetarians a sense of ‘apartheid’ towards meat eaters. He added that he did not appreciate the attempt to rationalise vegetarianism “trying to find reasons, medical and hygienic, for what rests on a sense of compassion as opposed to cruelty. This is the only reason for vegetarianism as far as I can see”, he said. The session was held at the former Assembly Hall in the Government Estate, Mount Road.
