ISI mark must for 17 steel products

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Union Government has made it mandatory for the manufacture, sale and distribution of 17 steel products to carry the standard ISI mark of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).

A gazette notification to this effect has been issued by the Department of Consumer Affairs. The Order is to come into force after six months from the date of its publication in the Official Gazette shortly.

The order, according to an official release here, covers semis for re-rolling, long products used in infrastructure/construction, steel plates for pressure vessels and boilers, electrical steel sheets for electrical machines and tinplates for packaging food products.

However, it excludes bars and rods of thickness less than 6mm as also structural (angles) that are normally made from re-rollable scrap by small re-rollers and used for non-critical and non-load bearing applications like grills and window frames.
